Product description

BERGAMA

The city of Bergama is located in western Turkey, near the Aegean coast on the site of ancient Pergamum. This city has been knotting rugs of excellent quality wool since the 16th century. A distinctive feature of these rugs is that up to six weft threads can be taken up for each row of knots. The knots are symmetrical, and not very dense; the side edges are flat comprising 2-4 paired warp threads "wrapped" by the weft. The ends often have a wide kilim border. The patterns of the Bergama rugs clearly reveal their classical, Anatolian ancestry, especially in the rugs commonly known as Holbein with big and small patterns.
